Villages & Settlements of Folegandros

Despite its small size, Folegandros has a fascinating variety of settlements, each revealing a different side of the island. From the lively alleys of Chora to the traditional farmhouses of Ano Meria and the seaside atmosphere of Agali, short distances connect places with their own distinctive character and pace of life.

Chora The heart of Folegandros

Built approximately 200 metres above sea level, Chora is the island’s capital and one of the most beautiful traditional settlements in the Cyclades. Its cobbled alleys, whitewashed houses, flower-filled courtyards and picturesque squares are best explored on foot, as motor vehicles are not permitted within the village.

At its edge stands the historic Kastro, dramatically positioned above the cliffs, while the Church of Panagia overlooks the settlement from the hillside. Restaurants, cafés, bars and local shops make Chora the island’s main centre for dining and entertainment.

KaravostasisThe welcoming port of the island

Karavostasis is the port of Folegandros and the first place visitors see upon arrival. Despite being the island’s main transport hub, it maintains a relaxed seaside atmosphere.

Chochlidia, its family-friendly main beach, lies beside the harbour, while Vardia and several smaller coves are nearby. Local buses connect the port with Chora and Ano Meria, while excursion boats depart for beaches around the island. Accommodation, tavernas, cafés and useful services are also available.

Ano MeriaThe authentic rural side of Folegandros

Ano Meria extends across the north-western part of Folegandros and preserves the island’s agricultural traditions. Its houses and farms are scattered across a rugged landscape shaped by the wind and generations of rural life.

The settlement is known for its themonies, traditional farming complexes combining a home, cultivated land and animal enclosures. Visitors can also explore the Ecological and Folklore Museum, enjoy local food and discover traditional products from the village’s wood-fired bakery and pasteli workshop.

AgaliA peaceful seaside retreat

Located in the picturesque bay of Vathi, Agali is one of the island’s most popular seaside settlements. Its sandy beach and crystal-clear waters are ideal for families and relaxing days by the sea.

Tavernas, cafés and accommodation are available nearby. Coastal paths lead to Fira and Galyfos beaches, while small boats connect Agali with Agios Nikolaos and Livadaki.

Petousis & LivadiFrom traditional countryside to the sea

Petousis and Livadi reveal the quieter, rural side of Folegandros. Petousis is one of the island’s smallest and oldest agricultural settlements, with traditional themonies, cultivated land and animal enclosures reflecting the local way of life.

A rural dirt track connects Petousis with Livadi, a peaceful settlement near Karavostasis, where scattered farmhouses extend towards the coast. The area offers easy access to Livadi Beach and is also home to the island’s camping facilities.
